With so many types of fences to choose from, however, you may not know which is right for you. If you need a new fence and want good security features, check out these three common types of fences and what security features they offer.

Privacy Fences

Privacy fences are often made from wood, composite, or vinyl because these materials can easily be produced into planks. These planks are used to craft a tall, solid fence with no gaps between the planks. Many homeowners choose privacy fences to stop prying eyes. This makes spending time in your backyard more enjoyable and private.

However, privacy fences also make it hard for potential criminals to see what valuables you may have in your yard or home. Even if the criminal decides to take a peek, climbing over a tall privacy fence can be difficult, and as long as the fence has been well-maintained, the intruder should not be able to pry off boards without making a lot of noise.

Privacy fences also make it harder for children and dogs to escape the yard, while helping to keep out other critters like raccoons, opossums, and skunks that can harm your children or pets and spread disease.

Aluminum Fences

Aluminum fences are often used to mimic the style of wrought iron fences without the high cost. This type of fence is better if you want to be able to see what is going on outside your yard. This style also makes it harder for people to sneak into your yard because you can easily spot them right through the fence.

Because the pickets are vertical, kids, dogs, and criminals can't climb it like a ladder, and the pickets make it hard for criminals to get enough traction to jump the fence. If they do manage to jump over the fence, many aluminum fences have the same pointy tips that wrought iron fences have, making it almost impossible to get over the fence without injury.

Aluminum fences are also harder to break down, so criminals may need tools to make a cut in the fence. All that noise is often too high of a risk for most criminals.

Chain-Link Fences

Chain-link fences also make it easy for you to see through the fence, making it a better choice for blending in with your yard than for offering privacy. However, some chain-link fences do have slats that fit through the diamond-shaped openings in the fence to offer some privacy.

These types of fences can be tall with anti-climbing measures, such as barbed wire or an angle at the top.

The traditional diamond-shaped openings of chain-link fences are usually too small for adult criminals to fit their feet inside, making it hard to climb the fence in general. As with aluminum fences, chain-link fences are durable. Plus, in order for a criminal to make a big enough hole to enter, they'd need to cut a lot of metal, which can take more time than a criminal is willing to take.

Many fences help deter potential criminals who simply don't want to bother with a fence. However, some fences provide better protection than others, making them more secure.
